Fair Housing Addresses Rights

Description

Fair Housing has been a subsequent housing struggle that unfortunately continues today. Due to discriminatory practices in housing, the Fair Housing Act was passed as law in 1968. However, that did not end the regime of discriminatory behavior that preceded it. This piece from Trinity's Watkinson Library collections describes a statement from the City Human Relations Commission's Fair Housing Office in 1979. It discusses the rise in the number of evictions filed at the period owing to nonpayment of rent. As a result, a substantial number of renters were evicted. This story also stated that Hartford was suffering from a severe housing scarcity. Tenants explained that nonpayment of rent was due to dissatisfaction with the dwelling circumstances.
