Local News: NAACP Drives Against North End Conditions
Description
The Hartford Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, or NAACP announced an organized campaign against ‘slum lords’ and the conditions they bring in the North End. The conditions specified were rent gouging by the landlords and neglected living issues such as rodent infestations (rodents and roaches). The campaign was installed by a general meeting of the association under recommendation by head of an Action Committee, Wilbur, G. Smith. The program – led campaign was to include a promotion to inform North End residents of their legal rights in eviction proceedings, demand a status on the prosecution of violators, and negotiate with North End landlords in an attempt to lower rents in cooperation from tenants in the upkeep of property.
