Housing Struggles

Tenants are often compelled to take action when they face difficult circumstances, including exorbitant rent prices, inadequate living conditions, maintenance neglect, and unjust eviction practices. These challenges can pose significant obstacles for individuals and families in their pursuit of stable and affordable housing. Through the power of unity and collective action, tenant organizations have the ability to amplify their voices, advocate for their rights, and drive positive changes that benefit the entire community.

These challenges are not a thing of the past; they are still being faced by individuals today, such as Pastor AJ Johnson, who in our interview recounts his interaction with a neglectful landlord. There was disregard in property maintenance, including a mouse issue. This led to tenants taking matters into their own hands, combating the infestation using sticky traps and mouse pellets. The pellets were mistakenly consumed by a small kid, resulting in poisoning and hospitalization. This sparked the No More Slumlords campaign. In this section, we will go over many stories just like this one that inspired tenants to organize.
